Two Men And A Truck Inspired By Sustainable And Charitable Actions Of Ozharvest

The event’s keynote speaker was Ronni Kahn, the founding director of OzHarvest a food rescue charity that matches surplus food with people in need.

In her first month in operation back in 2004, OzHarvest created 13,000 meals from food that would otherwise have gone to waste.

And in September this year, OzHarvest created 552,000 meals from food the waste cycle that is a natural outcome of the hospitality industry.

“Food is not just about nutrition. It’s about caring, sharing, abundance and gratitude,” she said.

Australia wide OzHarvest delivers an average of 441, 500 meals per month with a fleet of 15 vans. This equates to 147 tonnes each month.

This prevents thousands of kilograms of food from being dumped as landfill each year.

OzHarvest’s fleet collects leftover produce and food on a regular and professional basis from businesses and events and then converts it to meals for Australians in need – at no cost to food donors and recipients.

Ronni said in one case, OzHarvest rescued 16,500 carrots that were rejected by major supermarkets because they weren’t orange enough.

Astoundingly, Australians waste close to 3 million tonnes of food per annum, or 136 kilos per person per annum.

OzHarvest’s mission is to provide food that tastes good, that’s also good for the soul.
